Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya

Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya (1924–97) is a towering name in modern Assamese literature, universally acclaimed for his 1979 novel, Mrityunjay. His masterpiece for which he won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1961, Irayuungon, has also been hailed as a masterpiece of Indian literature. One of the earliest winners of the Jnanpith award he authored 22 novels, 30 songs and several volumes of short stories, apart from essays and literary journals.
