Qurratulain Hyder (1927-2007) was a trendsetter in modern Urdu fiction. She gained recognition as a writer while she was still a teenager. Her novel, Aag Ka Darya, regarded as the finest work in Urdu after independence, has been translated into all Indian languages. She won the Sahitya Akademi Award for a collection of short stories in 1967. She was received the Jnanpith Award.
