Benedict de Spinoza

Benedict de Spinoza (1632–1677) was a Dutch-Jewish philosopher and one of the foremost thinkers of the Enlightenment. Born in Amsterdam to Portuguese-Jewish refugees, he was excommunicated from the synagogue for his radical ideas equating God with Nature. His masterpiece, The Ethics (1677), written in a geometric style, presents a vision of the universe as a unified, deterministic system where understanding nature through reason brings true freedom and peace of mind. Spinoza’s rational and revolutionary ideas laid the groundwork for modern philosophy and continue to influence thought across disciplines today.
