William Strunk Jr.

William Strunk Jr. born in 1869 in Cincinnati and later raised in upstate New York, was a distinguished American scholar and professor whose passion for the English language shaped his life’s work. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati, he earned his doctorate at Cornell University, where he would go on to teach for nearly five decades. Strunk was admired for his disciplined, engaging approach to instruction and for his ability to reduce complex ideas to their clearest form. His commitment to helping students write with precision led him to compile a short handbook of rules and principles that emphasized clarity, economy, and effective composition. These notes became the foundation for The Elements of Style, the concise writing guide that would eventually become a literary landmark. Originally created for his own students in 1918, Strunk’s guide achieved much wider recognition when his former student, E. B. White, revised and expanded it decades later.
