Lucy Maud Montgomery

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton, (now known as New London), Prince Edward Island, on 30 November 1874. When she was just twenty-one months old, her mother died of tuberculosis, and her father entrusted a young Lucy to her mother’s parents, while he eventually remarried. As a child living with an elderly couple, Montgomery found friends in her imagination, nature, books and writing, a trait existent in Anne of Green Gables as well. Montgomery started writing poetry when she was nine years old. Montgomery wrote her first novel, Anne of Green Gables in the year 1905. It also became her most famous novel. Despite sending the manuscript to several publishers, Montgomery received rejections from all of them. Disappointed, she put away the manuscript in a hat box. Three years later, she found the manuscript again, reread it and worked on it again. Then, she tried her luck in getting it published again. It was finally accepted and published in 1908 to become an immediate best-seller. Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful read for young and old alike, and is a classic that lives in your mind forever.
