The Happy Prince follows a golden statue who, from his high pedestal, sees the suffering in his city and enlists a loyal swallow to distribute his riches to the poor and needy. In The Nightingale and the Rose, a nightingale gives her life to create a red rose for a lovelorn student, symbolising the sacrifice love demands.
Other tales like The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend and The Remarkable Rocket explore themes of loyalty, friendship, and the folly of vanity with Wilde’s signature wit and depth. Together, these tales blend fairy-tale magic with profound lessons about kindness, sacrifice, and the true meaning of beauty and love that resonate beyond childhood.
“Kindness is no virtue: it is a necessity. It is the only thing that can make a world bearable, a life worth living.”
